Running Ghost is the tenth episode of Season 1 of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.
The railroad hires a group of hunters, lead by Tate Rankin, to kill buffalo before the railroad comes through. Sully goes to confront the Buffalo Hunters, only to be beaten & left to die. During recovery, it's discovered that he's paralyzed, and Dr. Mike doesn't know if it's a temporary or a permanent case of paralysis. Meanwhile, Thaddeus Birch, a slick con, is going through town convincing the local businessmen to sell in order to make room for the railroad & big profits.
Information[]
- Tate Rankin claims he was hired by the railroad to kill buffalo. After his interaction with "Thaddeus Birch" in town, and Rankin demanding that he be cut in on part of the scheme of that Mr. Birch has concocted, were Tate and his men really hired by the railroad? The other piece of evidence about questioning if they were really hired is the telegram answer that Michaela receives from the railroad saying that the company didn't hire Birch. Matthew later confirms that it is the Army, not the railroad companies, hiring men like Tate Rankin, and his two hired men to kill the buffalo in Where the Heart Is.
- Rankin and his men beat up Sully, and then leave him for dead.
- First mention of the railroad.
- Cloud Dancing finds Sully and brings him to Dr. Mike
- The Cheyenne call on the white buffalo, Running Ghost, to protect Sully after he goes back to deal with Rankin.
- Plot Device Arc: Con man. The first con man that the town falls for is Thaddeus Birch, although he mentions that it is the "name" he is currently using. The next con man is Julius Hoffman in Luck of the Draw.
